How SK-II came to be one of the world's top-selling beauty brands.SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

In the late 1970s a Japanese monk visiting a sake brewery in Kobe noticed something odd about the elderly staff: while their faces were wrinkled, their hands were creaseless and soft. The monk investigated and found that liquid extracted during the yeast-fermentation process, which the employees constantly handled, was the key. He took a sample to some scientists, who named the mix of vitamins, minerals and amino acids Pitera.
By 1980 a Pitera-based formula hit shelves as part of SK-II's range. Facial Treatment Essence was the brand's hero product, containing more than 90 per cent pure Pitera.
The skincare-savvy Japanese women referred to the essence as their 'holy water', and SK-II is now one of the world's top-selling brands, with millions of followers - including Cate Blanchett, who decants the essence into a purse-friendly spray bottle for an on-the-go glow. £65; harrods.com .
